What Is The Book About?
Akhlaq Hamalah al-Qur'an wa Ahlih is a principal source that provides essential lessons on Islamic manners and etiquettes of those who recite, preserve and follow the Qur’an. Filled with textual evidences, this book motivates readers to engage more with the Qur’an and to implement it, by discussing various virtues of the Qur’an and the People of the Qur’an. It contains practical and timeless advices that every Muslim can benefit from.
Favourite Quote From The Book
So whoever has these qualities when reciting the Qur’an and listening to it from others, the Qur’an is for him a Cure: thus he becomes rich without wealth, becomes honoured without relatives, and finds solace where others have anxiety.
His concern when he begins reciting a surah is, “When will I be admonished by what I recite?” His objective is not, “When will I complete the surah?” Rather his objective is, “When will I understand from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, His address? When will I restrain myself? When will I learn a lesson?”
Summary Of Key Ideas
Note: This book is dense so I have relied on an explanation of the book by Ustadh Abdurrahman Hassan to help with summarising the gems in the book.
The Qur’an has been sent as a guide for both our worldly affairs and for our salvation in the Hereafter. It is a Book that should be central in the lives of all Muslims, however, according to Ibn Qayyim رحمه الله only true believers of the following can actually benefit from the Qur’an:
Believe in Allah's warnings of His punishments including Hellfire
Believe in Allah's promises of His rewards including Jannah
Believe in the reminders given by Allah
If you have the above pre-requisites, you have the chance to transform yourself and your akhirah for the better by being among the People of the Qur’an, the People of Allah and His Elites.
The Most Profitable Trade With Allah
The most profitable way to trade with Allah is by reciting the Qur’an — it offers immense virtues for you such as:
It acts as your protective shield from misguidance and Hellfire.
It acts as a divine guiding light that shines the path to having the best outcomes in life by teaching you beneficial knowledge and prompting you towards righteous actions.
It gives you glad tidings of Jannah, the pleasure of Allah and the promise of staying in Jannah forever.
It heals you by enriching your heart and acting as a cure to your desires and doubts.
The above rewards can be yours when you strive to become among the People of the Qur’an.
What It Means To Be A People Of The Qur’an
To be considered among the People of the Qur’an, you must come with all of the following:
Correct pronunciation and articulation of the wording in the Qur’an
Correct implementation of the Qur’an in your life (in taking commandments and prohibition of the Qur’an)
Correct understanding of the Qur’an and not understanding and interpreting it incorrectly
According to Ibn Qayyim رحمه الله, someone will still be considered as a People of the Qur’an if they can read correctly and implement it in their lives, even if they don’t memorise the Qur’an. However, one simply cannot be considered a People of the Qur’an if their actions are not aligned with the Qur’an even if they recite or memorise the Qur’an well.
It will not be easy, but with such massive rewards offered, getting them will most definitely require some efforts from you.
The Secret To Becoming A Better Muslim
The secret to becoming a more obedient servant of Allah is to engage in tadabbur (deep reflection) of the Qur’an, especially regarding three things:
The meaning behind Allah’s Speech
The lessons that can be found in the Qur’an
The objectives behind His rulings
When you do tadabbur, it will empower you to transform your life such that you treat what’s halal as halal and what’s haram as haram. This is because you will learn three key things:
Who your Creator is
How to reach Allah i.e. the obedience He expects from you as His servant regarding the halal and haram
The great rewards Allah has prepared for the righteous believers, and the painful punishments He has prepared for the criminals and wrongdoers
What It Takes For The Qur’an To Change You
The path to becoming among the People of the Qur’an is clear and straightforward, however unfortunately, not everyone will have the ability to be changed by the Qur’an. According to Ibn Qayyim رحمه الله, the Qur’an can only have an impact on you and revolutionise your life if you also come with the following:
Your heart is alive
You listen attentively to the Speech of your Creator
Your are alert and present when engaging with the Qur’an
That said, if you really struggle to do deep reflection of the Qur’an, then you should beg Allah to undo any locks on your heart that are preventing you from benefiting from the Qur’an.
You Really Have To Listen To Allah
Depending on our relationship with the Qur’an, our fate in the akhirah can either be one of these two:
The Qur’an benefits you by taking you to Jannah; which happens when you follow the Qur’an
The Qur’an throws you into the Hellfire; which happens when the Qur’an follows you instead
When our time is up, all of us will regret being amongst the people who abandon or dismiss the Qur’an in this Dunya. Unfortunately, if you prefer and give more weight to the speech of everything else over the Speech of Allah, you are choosing to fail in the Hereafter.
If you wish to succeed, you must be willing to listen to the Speech of Allah by:
Taking on board the reminders that are most relevant to you when you encounter them and applying on yourself to get closer to Allah
Implementing the obligatory things Allah commands you to do
Turning to Allah with true repentance when you fall short (either you’re not doing what you're supposed to or you did what you're not supposed to do)
Surrendering everything about your life to your Creator
Your listening, when done well, should lead you towards knowledge and actions that will benefit you, and away from that will harm you both in this world and the next.
General Do’s and Don’ts With The Qur’an
The author shared the manners when reciting the Qur’an, and manners of a Qur’an teacher as well as a Qur’an student, however I will suffice you with the following general do’s and don'ts.
Don’t recite the Qur’an fast and quick.
Don’t make your goal to only complete reciting the Qur’an.
Don’t only recite the Qur’an a lot.
Do ponder over the Qur’an such that Allah’s Speech moves your heart.
Do measure your speech and actions against the commands Allah has given you. When they misalign, rebuke yourself and repent quickly. When they align, ask Allah to guide you towards more obedience.
Do recite the Qur’an in the way it deserves to be recited, by implementing the commands found within it.
These are in line with what the Companions رضي الله عنهم aimed to achieve when reciting the Qur’an: to ponder over the Speech of Allah, and to implement what Allah commands them to do.
